More Veggies/Less Meats
Did you know the international meat industry generates roughly 18% of the worlds
greenhouse gas emissions?  This does not mean you need to turn into a vegetarian,
but a reduction of meat eaten weekly can make a difference.

Package Reduction
25% or more household waste is made up of just packaging materials.  A family of
four can save $3,000 a year by taking a few simple steps and aid the environment too.
  • When shopping look for the less packaged products.
  • Buy products in largest size you can use. Avoid individual serving size items.
  • Buy cereal in the large box instead of in individual serving sizes.
  • Buy juice in concentrate and use reusable containers rather then
    individual serving packages.
  • Buy bottled water in a large plastic jug rather then individual servings.
    Reuse the plastic water bottles.
  • Buy large packages of sugar and flour.  Store flour in freezer to keep it
    longer.
  • Buy a large box of raisins.
  • Store dry items in pint and quart size canning jars which can be used
over and over again and still keep foods fresh and bug free.
  • Buy long lasting reusable items.
  • Use Rechargeable batteries.
  • Use cloth diapers instead of disposables.
  • Use real vs disposable cameras.
  • Switch to cloth napkins, sponges and cloth towels and wipes rather
    then paper towels and napkins.
  • Use washable plates, cups and silverware instead of disposables.
  • Use electric razors or hand razors rather then disposables.
  • Buy high quality/long life tires.
  • Use washable commuter mug for morning coffee.
  • Take your own bags to the supermarket.
  • Clean and service your appliances, computers, tools and cars to keep
    them running longer.
  • Buy products in recyclable containers.  Take a moment to look at each item
and make sure it can be recycled in your area.

Write to Companies
Be sure to send off letters to companies that supply your food needs on the grocery
shelves and ask them to reduce their packaging to be more environmental friendly
and to consider using recycled paper packaging.

Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is:
Support companies that have top environmental records and future-forward products.
Steer clear of products that are not environmentally friendly when possible.

Encourage "Green" Spending
Ask your local retailers to help encourage "green" spending by placing eco-friendly
products at eye-level or in prominent displays.

Grow Your Own
Rather then rely on grocery stores and hot houses to supply your needs. Consider
planting some of the vegetables and fruits you consume yourself.  If you have land,
regardless the size, you can do what is known as edible landscaping.  In edible
landscaping your trees are fruit trees, your shrubs berry bushes, and your flowers are
herbs and vegetable.  In locations where you can have a small orchard or large
garden, consider planting such to supply your food needs, or couple it with edible
landscaping.

Even if you live in an apartment you can grow your own foods.  Herbs and tomatoes
are wonderful apartment growing plants.

Consider working with others in the community or apartment complex to grow a
vegetable garden on a small space of land.  Ask your landlord to consider allowing a
communal garden for renters.
