Everything eventually needs to be replaced, and sometimes it's just nice to have
something different, there is absolutely nothing wrong with replacing, updating and
enjoying "new to me" things.

"New to Me" thinking is a mindset of realizing that ones junk is another persons
treasure, your treasure.  Just because someone else has once owned an item and
grown tired of it, does not make that item useless.  If you like the item and have a use
for it then it is "new to you" and worth getting.

The average American aids in the creation of 3 tons of global warming pollutants
through goods purchased.  This is mostly due to the energy required to create and
move these items.  The source of these energies equate to greenhouse gas
emissions in most situations.  Through purchase of used items, you can reduce your
personal impact by 5 to 10%.  If every household in America bought a few used things
vs new things, it could add up to as great as 300 million tons of CO2 not created each
year.

While changing your mindset to a "new to me" attitude. Also remember that there is a
value to purchasing older items.  Often these same items were created of finer quality
and made to last longer then those made today.  This can be a major financial plus
for you in the future.

Buy Used, How To's.

  • Use such tools as Craig's List, Freecycle, and yes even Ebay.
  • Visit antique stores, flea markets, swap meets, second-hand stores,
consignment shops and even charity-based thrift stores.
  • Pay attention to scrap yards which can be a wonderful resource for hard-to-find
    auto parts.
  • Frequent garage sales.

Be Smart, Be Creative.

  • Don't just think of the product you need, but also the problem you are trying to
    solve.
  • You need extra storage space in kitchen and would like a kitchen
island.  Rather then buy a new island, might a used chest dresser suit
your needs if you add a counter top to the top of it?
  • You need storage units for towels, toilet paper, and various other misc
bathroom odds and ends.  Rather then buy a paper holder, a shelf and
various baskets and holders. Might a small night table, dresser or even
a nicely painted and stenciled file cabinet be effective for your needs?
  • Remember older model refrigerators, washing machines, dishwashers, tv's,
computers and microwaves can be more environmental hazard then gain.  It is
often best to avoid these type of items and buy them new.
  • Give and Get.  Remember also to give items you grow out of back for others to
    use.
  • Buy ONLY what you need, not just because its cheap.
